Math, Health

Math – We are currently reviewing concepts covered this year in both grades, so you may see review sheets coming home every now and then this week. The grade 6 math assessment will be held next Wednesday and Thursday (June 7th & 8th). It will be administered first thing in the morning.

Health – The human sexuality component of the grade 6 health program began today. It will be held on three other days (Tuesday, Thursday and Friday) this week.  Please check in with your child this week on topics discussed as this would be a great way to initiate some dialogue in this subject area at home.

Update – Math, Language Arts, Health

Math Grade 6 – We have finished reviewing the number sense strand and we are now working on the shape and space section of the curriculum. You may see review sheets coming home from time to time so I’d ask you to make sure the students are completing these as they are very important in preparation for the math assessment in two weeks time.

Math Grade 5 – We are still working on the number sense strand specifically on decimals. You may see review sheets coming home from time to time so I’d ask you to make sure the students are completing these.

Language Arts – Tomorrow is the last day for the grade 6 language arts assessment. They will complete comprehension questions for their final story in the morning and be completing the good copy of their writing sample in the afternoon. Grade 5 will complete their second ACRAR comprehension assessment in the morning and finish the good copy of their writing sample in the afternoon.

Health – Students had their third class with Constable Markam Long of the Charlottetown Police Services on the “Healthy Me” program yesterday. I’d encourage parents to ask their child about these sessions as it is a great way to initiate some dialogue on peer pressure, making good choices and drug and alcohol use. They will have their fourth and final class with Cst. Long next Tuesday.

For grade 6 students, we will begin the human sexuality component of the health program next week. Notices went home about this yesterday, and I need those returned and signed by Friday if students wish to participate in the program. Ms. Hufnagel will be instructing the girls, and I will be working with the boys.

Update – Math, Language Arts, Healthy Me

Math – I have almost finished reviewing the number sense strand of the math curriculum with both grades. Grade 5 have completed their second foundational outcomes quiz while grade six has finished their third one. There are four quizzes for each grade to complete on the key foundational outcomes.

Language Arts – The first week of the language arts assessment for grade 6 has finished. Next week on Tuesday and Thursday, the assessment will take place again. The grade fives are completing some end of grade comprehension activities as they have finished an ACRAR (non-fiction passage) this week. They will do another one next week while the grade sixes complete their assessment

I will be taking the grade six students to Stonepark tomorrow for their school orientation which takes place from 9:30-11:30 am. There is also a parents’ meeting on Tuesday, May 23rd @ 7PM at Stonepark for any parents that wish to learn more about the workings of the school.

Today, students also had their second of four classes with Cst. Markam Long of the Charlottetown Police Services. He is instructing the “Healthy Me” program offered by the Charlottetown police. The students are really enjoying discussing the material with Cst. Long as the focus is on Internet safety, making wise decisions/peer pressure, and information on drugs, alcohol and smoking.

Math, Language Arts

Math – Both grades have to complete a review booklet for tomorrow.

Language Arts – I’ve sent home a sample of the comprehension activities students will be working on during the upcoming assessment next week. I also sent along a notice and a pamphlet explaining the details of the assessment and I asked the students to return that notice signed to acknowledge that parents saw it. Students also have to return the sample to me as well. The pamphlet does not have to be returned.

Math, Language Arts

Math – Today, both grades have begun reviewing concepts that we have covered throughout the year in order to freshen up our skill set before the summer months come. This review is of even greater importance for the grade 6 students who will be having a year-end math assessment on June 7th and 8th. We will be looking at a curriculum outcome a day from now until the end of the school year.

Language Arts – The grade 6 students completed an example of a reading comprehension activity that will be offered in the grade 6 language arts assessment beginning next week. More information on this assessment will arrive home this week so be on the lookout for this please.
