Final Days!

Hey all,

Just a heads up on some year-end activities and items:

FUN DAY/BARBECUE – TUESDAY, JUNE 27TH – Our year end fun day will take place on Tuesday with a raindate of Wednesday. Hotdogs and juice will be provided to the students for lunch. The students will have a fun day doing stations around the school. Please make sure that your child has sunscreen and a hat for fun day. We are in need of volunteers to help with the barbecue.

GRADE SIX CLOSING – TUESDAY JUNE 27TH – We will be holding our annual closing for the grade six students tomorrow evening at 6 PM in the school gymnasium. We would ask the students to report to the classroom by 5:45 PM.

SCHOOL SUPPLY REMINDER – For those families who haven’t already done so please send your child(ren)’s $40.00 school supply fee into the school by next Wednesday, June 28th. The teachers will need to purchase the supplies over the summer for your child in September.

LIBRARY NOTICES – If you received a notice or email regarding outstanding library books, can you please send the books back before Wednesday or send in the $5.00 replacement fee. We would much rather have the books than the money.

Seeing as Wednesday, June 28th is the final day of classes, this will be my last blog post of the school year. I’d like to thank all the parents for their support, and I wish all the students a safe, relaxing summer vacation!

Year-End Updates

The end of the school year is fast approaching so I wanted to keep you in the loop with some important dates to mark on your calendars for next week.

  • Monday, June 19 – class field trip to Sandspit (rain date June 20). Please try to have forms and money in by this coming Friday. The cost is $10 per student which excludes the go-cart rides
  • Friday, June 23rd – Class Electronics Day/Grade 6 Fun Day. In the morning, all students can bring in their favorite technology to use in class with their friends. Grade 6 students will be treated to pizza, cake and pop for lunch as part of their fun day. There will be no charge for this. The grade 6 students will then go bowling at “The Alley” at noon. Grade 5 students will remain at school as it will be a regular afternoon for them. We will be walking, so permission forms will be sent home along with information on any additional fees for bowling.

The grade 6 closing is on Tuesday, June 27th and the school-wide field day is on Wednesday, June 28th. I’ll send additional reminders and information as these dates get closer.

Math, Language Arts, Health Updates

Math – The first day of the grade 6 math assessment went well as the students prepare for the second and final day tomorrow. The grade five students continue their year-end  review.

Language Arts – We have started a new novel “Number the Stars” which will take us to the end of the year. It is the story of a Danish family dealing with the German occupation during the Second World War.

Last week we finished “Safe as Houses” which was a fictional account based on the actual 1954 flood of the Humber River in Weston, Ontario. The students really enjoyed this book as it focused on three children who managed to survive the flood. The events were based on the experiences of an actual survivor of the flood which was caused by Hurricane Hazel.

In writing, we have started our poetry unit as we are experimenting with free verse. Students have started an anthology which is in the Google writing classroom so you should check these out as we progress through the different forms. The students are doing a terrific job experimenting with metaphors, similes and personification to create imagery.

The grade 6 human sexuality unit is now completed but the grade 5 health unit still has to be completed. A form went home on Monday for permission to participate in this unit of study. I’d like to have those back by Friday. Mr. McQuaid will be teaching this to the grade 5 students.

The year is quickly coming to a close and I’ll send out other reminders of some year-end activities that are planned as the dates draw near.
