Math – The first day of the grade 6 math assessment went well as the students prepare for the second and final day tomorrow. The grade five students continue their year-end review.
Language Arts – We have started a new novel “Number the Stars” which will take us to the end of the year. It is the story of a Danish family dealing with the German occupation during the Second World War.
Last week we finished “Safe as Houses” which was a fictional account based on the actual 1954 flood of the Humber River in Weston, Ontario. The students really enjoyed this book as it focused on three children who managed to survive the flood. The events were based on the experiences of an actual survivor of the flood which was caused by Hurricane Hazel.
In writing, we have started our poetry unit as we are experimenting with free verse. Students have started an anthology which is in the Google writing classroom so you should check these out as we progress through the different forms. The students are doing a terrific job experimenting with metaphors, similes and personification to create imagery.
The grade 6 human sexuality unit is now completed but the grade 5 health unit still has to be completed. A form went home on Monday for permission to participate in this unit of study. I’d like to have those back by Friday. Mr. McQuaid will be teaching this to the grade 5 students.
The year is quickly coming to a close and I’ll send out other reminders of some year-end activities that are planned as the dates draw near.
