Just providing an update on what I will be covering during the first month.
Grade 6 Math – We have started a unit on place value which should take us no more than two- three weeks to complete. In this unit, we review expanded, standard and word form of both whole and decimal numbers. We will also discuss the period structure of numbers as well as comparing and ordering numbers.
Language Arts – Today we started “Run” for our first read aloud. It is a novel surrounding the courageous run of Terry Fox. The genre is realistic fiction as events concerning Terry and the Marathon of Hope are factual, but the storylines of the characters he interacts with (along with the characters themselves) are fictional. Throughout the course of this novel, I will be exploring many reading strategies along with observing comprehension through literal, inferential and evaluative questioning.
In writing, students are working on their first journal post of the year. The posts are entitled “Words of Wisdom” as their responses are centered around quotations that deal with topics that support social and academic development. Next week they will begin their first formal writing piece that I will evaluate for the first term report.
Science – For the next month or so we will be exploring space. More specifically, we will be looking at the sun, the moon, seasons, the solar system and how astronauts are able to live in space.
Please sign and return the forms I sent home last week as soon as you can. Hope to see parents at “Meet the Teacher” night this coming Thursday. The September newsletter has also been posted on the website.
