Social Studies, Language Arts Update

Social Studies – We have completed the first unit in the text  Culture Quest, and students received a review sheet today for a quiz we will be having on Friday. Students need to have this review completed for tomorrow so it can be corrected. They can then use this as a study guide for the quiz. Please ask your child about this and ensure that they are prepared for Friday.

Language Arts – We are four chapters into our class novel entitled “Iqbal”. It is a story about the actual Iqbal Masih, a young Pakistani boy, told as a realistic fictional account. The story addresses child bonded labour in Pakistan as the children in the story are working in a carpet factory. The assessment I’m using on their knowledge of the story is a storyboard they are creating using Pixton.  They are constructing one comic panel per chapter that illustrates the main idea of the chapter. Check these out if you wish. Just ask your child for their login info.

Language Arts – If any students have not returned their persuasive essays, I’d like to have these back as soon as possible. Students have a ReadWorks comprehension story to complete by Wednesday.

We also will be starting a new novel tomorrow entitled “Iqbal”. My assessment tool for this novel will be having the students create a main idea storyboard of each chapter using Pixton > https://www.pixton.com/ca/ . Students have their login info, so feel free to check this out.

Math Grade 6 – If any students have not returned their test signed, could they bring it back as soon as possible, please. We have started a new unit on angles, and a duotang sheet needs to be completed for tomorrow entitled “Naming Angles”.

Subway orders are tomorrow.

Welcome back and Happy New Year!

Math Grade 6 – Students received their quizzes on the unit on fractions, decimals and percent. They need to get these signed and return them to me tomorrow. We will be starting a  new unit on angles. In this unit, students will measure, construct and identify angles and these concepts are foundational learnings for grade 6.

Writing – Students received their scores on the persuasive essay they worked on before Christmas. This needs to be signed and returned to me tomorrow.

Language Arts – I have marked the persuasive essays, but I don’t think I’ll give them back until the new year. In reviewing these pieces on the students’ return, it will be a great way to emphasize the key components of their writing moving forward in the new year. I was generally very pleased with the effort the students put into this piece.

Math Grade 6 – Students received their marks for the quiz on fractions, decimals, and percent. I’ll go over it tomorrow, and they’ll be sent home in the new year for parents’ signatures.

This will be my last post of 2017, so I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a peaceful holiday break. These students are a very enjoyable group to work with, and I look forward to a terrific 2018.

Math, Language Arts

Math Grade 6 – Students will be doing a quiz tomorrow on fractions, decimals and percent. Most students will be ready to do the quiz tomorrow, but some may not. Those that don’t complete the quiz tomorrow will do it next week.

Language Arts – I’m in the process of marking the persuasive essays the students completed, and they will be sent home next week. I’ll post here on the blog when you can expect to see them at home.

I don’t anticipate any homework being sent home next week as we move toward the Christmas break. We will be having some special event days next week as things wind down. It has been a great 2017 in our grade 5/6 class, and I look forward to more of the same in 2018.

Writing – Students have to have Journal #2 completed by Wednesday. They are welcome to work on this at home. The persuasive essays have all been submitted, and I’ll have  them marked and back to the students by the beginning of next week.

Math – We should be ready for a quiz this coming Friday on fractions (both proper, improper and mixed numbers), decimals and percent. I am currently checking student duotangs, and they should be bringing them home in the near future to review for this quiz.

Note – This should be the last week for homework unless there are some students that may have outstanding tasks that need to be completed before the Christmas break.
